On May 25, Cadet Maas will graduate from the United States Air Force Academy after four years of being a Fighting Falcon. Cadet Maas will graduate with a major in Philosophy and minors in German and Religion Studies. He will commission into the United States Space Force as a 2nd Lieutenant.
Then it's home for 60 days before he goes back to the books. We can announce that soon-to-be 2nd Lt. Maas has chosen Boston College to pursue his Master's degree in Philosophy, starting in fall of 2022. He will be fast-tracked to complete his degree in 18 months (three semesters), per Air Force regulations. He has been granted a full scholarship and will receive a housing stipend from the Air Force. Most importantly, he is genuinely excited for this next phase in his life. And we are as well.
Boston College is home of the Eagles, so he is simply exchanging one bird of prey for another. Very fitting.
Directly prior to starting classes, 2nd Lt. Maas will be required to check in at the nearest Air Force base, which will be responsible for him while attending Boston College. That will most likely be Hanscom Air Force Base, located predominantly within Bedford, MA.
Boston College was founded in 1863 by the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits) to educate Boston’s predominantly Irish Catholic immigrant community. It opened its doors on September 5, 1864, in a building on Harrison Avenue in Boston’s South End, a “small streetcar college” for commuting students.
Inspiration for Boston College's academic and societal mission is drawn from the University's distinctive religious and intellectual heritage. As a Jesuit Catholic University, Boston College is rooted in a world view that calls upon its students to learn, to search for truth, and to live in service to others.
Boston College was one of the pioneering Collegiate Gothic projects of the early twentieth century, and its architecture is stunning. Bapst Library (1922–1928) contains stained glass by James H. Dolan, S.J., depicting ideals of Jesuit education. The library's Ford Memorial Tower houses a famed medieval staircase, the Shakespeare stained glass window, and important Flemish tapestries donated by the Hearst Foundation.
Following World War II, new construction was influenced by Modernism, with cleaner volumes and wide expanses of glass. In 2012, Boston College opened a new academic facility on the main part of its Chestnut Hill campus. Stokes Hall is the school’s most expensive educational building ever, representing a $78-million investment in the humanities. And where 2nd Lt. Maas will likely take the majority of his classes, although he will have the unique opportunity to cross register and take courses at nearby Boston University, Brandeis University, and Tufts University.
The architect, Tsoi/Kobus & Associates, designed Stokes Hall to match the English Collegiate Gothic Style of the earlier historic buildings.
One he completes his Master's degree, then it is off to the opposite coast to be stationed at the Space Force base in Los Angeles. But we will save that story for another day.
